To mark 400 years since Shakespeare’s death, SVP will perform The Taming of the Shrew. This rough-and-tumble farce is full of action and bawdy humour, centring round the battle of the sexes. This is essentially a love story on the time honoured theme of boy meets girl, she rejects him and eventually succumbs!
Petruchio arrives in Padua in search of a wife and, on hearing of the beautiful but shrewish Katherina Minola ,decides she fits the bill and sets about wooing her. Kate has other ideas and their encounters are full of impassioned exchanges, angry exchanges and even blows-until love conquers all.
As usual, a host of other characters form the sub plot-Bianca,Kate’s younger sister is also beautiful but not shrewish and,as a result, has many suitors clambering for her hand. They are thwarted, though, by Kate’s family, who will not let Bianca marry until her elder sister is off  their hands.
The play is full of slapstick humour and witty language and is a delightful mix of clever dialogue and rollicking good spirits.
